Every few years, I have to take my picture to update my writer’s website. Enlisting the help of a friend to take the pictures, I got ready for the event.
Five outfits and a bunch of tears later, I was finally ready. Examining the pictures a few days later, they came out beautifully. I, however, disagreed. I picked at every hair that was out of place and the ten (or in my mind, twenty) pounds the camera put on my body.
Why was I so obsessed with how my body looks? Shouldn’t I just be content with how I look right now?
As a pastor’s wife, people think I have it altogether. They think the pedestal they have me on never shakes. But even pastor’s wives fall off every now and again. I have struggles just like everyone else, including self-control, body image and appearance. But most people believe we don’t share the same difficulties as others and that somehow we have this secret tunnel to God where we have tea and crumpets and conversations with Him whenever we ask.
We all need help when it comes to our struggles. That’s why church accountability is so important. Connecting with someone with whom I can share my deepest pain will help jumpstart my faith. But that’s not as easy to come by if you’re a pastor’s wife.
Everyone needs someone who will bear her burdens with her, even your pastor’s wife. She needs someone in her corner, willing to support and accept her just as she is.
Have you ever taken the time to get to know your pastor’s wife? Do you know what her struggles are? Will you commit to praying for her?
We know you keep us on pedestals. But even we need to come down every once and a while.
