Over twenty years ago, I learned the power of a women’s retreat.
A women’s retreat is the kind of treat that so improves a woman’s quality of life, she does it again and again. Hence, re-treat.
And we are going. Friday!
I pilgrimage with a group of girlfriends each year. The group’s members vary from year to year but they are all friends for life. I tell these girlfriends, “No matter how you have to get me there, get me there!”
Get me to the place where Jesus is.
The place away from life and its crazy. The place away from the hurry. They place where rest seeps into the deep crevices of my tired. The place where tears fall and laughter flows.
The place where Jesus is. The place of His presence. I love how Jesus loves to come to this place where my girlfriends gather.
We are friends who carry one another to where Jesus is.
This must be what the paralyzed man in Luke 5 told his friends. Luke 5:17 says Jesus was teaching to a large crowd from many towns, “And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.”
Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat. When they couldn’t get through the crowd to the place where Jesus was, they climbed to the roof, removed some tiles and lowered the man down “right in front of Jesus.” (v. 19)
Jesus saw their faith, forgave his sins and healed him.
Think about it.
The prayers of faithful friends can turn God’s ear to your heart’s cries. God honors the actions of faithful friends!
These guys loved their friend so much they made a stretcher, loaded him on it and carried him. Probably for miles, maybe for hours or days. After carrying him through town after town with sore backs, blistered fingers and bruised shins, they discovered that the crowd was so thick, Jesus might not be able to see their friend. So despite aching arms they climbed to the roof just to get their beloved friend in the presence of the One who could heal him.
My own girlfriends save, borrow and sacrifice. Some travel long distances after long work days. They give up time with family and weekends of home projects just to get right in front of Jesus with me. We travel together to a place where “the power of the Lord is present.”
Luke 5:25 says, “Without a moment’s hesitation [the paralyzed man] stood up in front of them…and went praising God.”
Sisters, I can’t wait to meet you on Friday. I’m praying for you as we travel to a place where Jesus is. I am anxious to praise Him together and receive the wholeness He delivers through faithful friends. Girlfriends like you.
On Tuesday (I accidentally ran it early), Amelia Rhodes shares with her husband’s journey through cancer.
On Friday, Linda Gill continues her helpful series on Caring for the Elderly, “Memory’s Music.”
SDG Gathering Important Information
Lisa Smith is helping me facilitate our gatherings each week. She is visiting those of you who link up on “even” numbers and I am visiting the “odd” (don’t worry, I’m not calling YOU odd). She will also be sharing on Mondays with you from time to time, opening up her heart and life to you, as you faithful do with us each week you link up. We do have some important housekeeping items about this gathering, so if you have not read them, please come here to catch up. The condensed version: Link up ONE post that shares your heart authentically and be sure to check in with some of your sisters who have linked up with you. Leave a heartfelt word of encouragement for them after you visit their space. This is a community where we actively seek to get to know each other.
